abstract The present invention relates to a method for determining the number of living cells in a test fluid, to an apparatus for such a method and the use thereof. According to a method of the invention, prior to the measurement of a metabolic rate of the cells, these cells are concentrated in a reduced volume of the test fluid. A method according to the invention finds suitable application in inter alia determining cell densities in, for instance, surface water or groundwater, but use in flower water samples or water from a wastewater purification plant is also possible.
