titleOfInvention Automatic high negative pressure relief valve and chest drainage units using same
abstract Featured is an automatic high-negative pressure relief valve (100) and its use in combination with an apparatus (300) for draining fluid from a body. In broad terms the negative pressure relief valve (100) includes a biasing mechanism (108), a moveable member (150) acted upon by the biasing mechanism (108) and a seating surface (130). When the pressure within a chamber (300), in which a portion of the relief valve (100) is in fluid communication with, is less than a predetermined negative pressure, the moveable member (150) is moved by the biasing mechanism (108) to sealing engage the seating surface (130) and when the pressure is at or above the predetermined value, the restoring force of the biasing mechanism (108) is overcome and the moveable member (150) moves away from the seating surface (130). In an exemplary embodiment, the biasing mechanism (108) is a spring, diaphragm or wave washer.
