abstract |
The present invention relates to methods and compositions for increasing bone density and mass, osteoblastic activity and/or osteogenesis. These methods are based on increasing the bone levels of heparanase and/or expression of heparanase in bone, so as to enhance bone biomechanical and hematopoietic supportive properties. The invention further provides for methods and uses of heparanase for increasing bone density, mass, osteoblastic activity and osteogenesis in a mammalian subject in need thereof. The methods and uses according to the invention are particularly applicable for the treatments of a subject suffering from a medical condition characterized by bone deficit, bone loss, reduced bone mass or bone fracture and for subjects in need of enhancing the integration and anchorage of endosseous implants. |
