abstract The present invention provides a method, and a ink jet printer configure to perform the method, of manufacturing a transfer for application to a substrate, the method comprising the steps of (a) applying an image (20, 30) to a carrier sheet (15); and (b) applying a cover coat (25, 35) over at least that area of the sheet to which the image has been applied, characterised in that the image and/or the cover coat is applied using an ink jet printer. The invention also provides a method of cover coating a transfer for application to a substrate, the method comprising the step of: coating a carrier sheet comprising one or more preĀ­printed images by applying a cover coat over at least that area of the sheet to which an image has been applied, characterised in that the cover coat is applied using an ink jet printer.
