The present invention includes methods for predicting meiotic nondisjunction using an Axs mutant, as well as methods for destroying defective oocytes, using either an Axs mutant or an Axs gene. The present invention pertains to methods for selecting wild-type gametes in individuals with chromosomally based pathologies through the use of the Axs, and Axs related nucleic acid sequences and the proteins therefrom.
