abstract It is intended to produce a biodegradable polyester showing desired properties. A mutant poly-3-hydroxyalcanoic acid synthase comprising the following amino acid sequence (a) or (b): (a) an amino acid sequence derived from the amino acid sequence represented by SEQ ID NO:1 by the substitution of at least one amino acid selected from the group consisting of glutamic acid at the 130-position, serine at the 325-position, serine at the 477-position and glutamine at the 481-position by other amino acid(s); and (c) an amino acid sequence derived from the amino acid sequence represented by SEQ ID NO:1 by the substitution of at least one amino acid selected from the group consisting of glutamic acid at the 130-position, serine at the 325-position, serine at the 477-position and glutamine at the 481-position by other amino acid(s), wherein at least one amino acid other than the amino acids at the 130-, 325-, 477- and 481-positions is deleted, substituted and/or added, and showing an activity of synthesizing a biodegradable polyester acid.
