abstract Inventions 1-3 relate to an image display unit provided with an image display plate for displaying an image formed by sealing at least two kinds of particles different in color and charging characteristic between two substrates, at least one of them being transparent, and imparting an electric field to particles from electrode pair consisting of electrodes provided on a substrate to move particles flying. In the first invention, fine recesses and/or fine protrusions (25) are provided on part of or whole of the surface of an electrode, or fine notched holes are provided on part of or whole of the surface of an electrode. In the second invention, the particle-contacting surface of a substrate is coated with a thin-film insulator having a volume resistivity of at least 1 × 1012 [Ω⋅cm] to provide a insulator thin film, or the arithmetic average roughness (Ra) and the unevenness average interval (Sm) of a particle-contacting substrate surface respectively satisfy specified expressions. In the third invention, a fly-moving current produced when particles in a pixel are moved flying is detected to thereby read an image display status.
