Wound dressing materials comprising chemically modified polysaccharides |
abstract |
The invention provides wound dressing materials comprising chemically modified polysaccharides, wherein at least one saccharide residue of the polysaccharide has grafted thereto a side chain comprising two or more carboxylate groups. Preferably, the modified polysaccharide is the product of a reaction between chitin/chitosan or a cellulose derivative with a carboxylate-substituted cyclic anhydride, such as cis-aconitic acid. The modified polysaccharides have antioxidant properties and selectively bind to dissolved iron, making them useful for the treatment of chronic wounds. |
