Disclosed are novel squarylium compounds for optical data carriers. A preferably transparent substrate, the surface of which is provided with a light-writable information layer, one or two optional reflecting layers, and another substrate or a protective layer are applied to said optical data carriers which can be written and read by red light, preferably laser light. The information layer contains a light-absorbing compound and an optional bonding agent, at least the inventive squarylium compound being used as the light-absorbing compound. |
