abstract Provided are methods and materials for genetically assessing likely bone mineral density (BMD) and thereby optionally determining the susceptibility of an individual to a disorder which is associated with an abnormal (e.g. low) level of BMD, the method comprising use of a TCIRG1 marker. The methods may be used e.g. for prediction of potential osteoporosis. Preferred TCIRG1 markers include single nucleotide polymorphisms at positions (i) 9326; (ii) 9508; (iii) 14242; (iv) 14286; (v) 19031, of the TCIRG1 gene.
