abstract Novel metal salts of (3S)-3-methoxycarbonyl-4-phenyl- butyric acid represented by the general formula (Ι) and being useful as intermediates in the production of various drugs: (Ι) [wherein M is a sodium ion or a calcium ion; when M is a sodium ion, n is 1, while when M is a calcium ion, n is 2]; and a process for preparation of the benzylsuccinic acid derivative (A) and pharmacologically acceptable salts thereof, which exhibit insulin secretion promoting and blood sugar decreasing effects and are useful as diabetes remedies, by using the above salt as the intermediate.
