abstract Using DNA microchips having 1265 types of rice ESTs bonded thereto, it is attempted to search for genes the expression of which is induced at the early stage of the elicitor treatment. Use is made therein of a chitin oligomer (N-acetylchitooligosaccharide) which is one of the major constituents of Pyricularia orizae cell wall. As a result, 6 types of novel elicitor-responsive ESTs are identified. Products of two genes (named CIGR1 gene and CIGR2 gene), from among these ESTs, have a motif characteristic to the GRAS family considered as transcriptional factors. Thus, it has been clarified for the first time that GRAS family members other than the gibberellin signal transduction regulator exist in rice.
