abstract Disclosed are new uses of compounds of formula (I) or mixtures of substances comprising one or more compounds of formula (I), wherein R1 and R2, independent of one another, are selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, methyl, straight-chained or branched, saturated or unsaturated alkyl with 2-10 C atoms and alkyl interrupted by one or more oxygen and/or sulfur atoms with 2-10 C atoms, and R3 and R4, independent of one another, are selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, hydroxy and methoxy. Said compounds are suitable as agents for: (a) inhibiting enzymes selected from the group consisting of tyrosinase, tyrosinase isoenzymes and the mixtures thereof and/or (b) treating microorganisms selected from the group consisting of (i) dandruff-causing microorganisms; (ii) body odor-causing microorganisms, (iii) acne-causing microorganisms, (iv) mycosis-causing microorganisms and their mixtures (v). Further disclosed are methods for preserving perishable articles and for cosmetic lightening of the human skin using the above-mentioned compounds.
