The use of nitric oxide donor compounds in the preparation of a medicament for the inhibition of growth factors in the pulmonary vasculature of a mammal, improving effort tolerance in humans suffering smoking induced lung injury and heart disease processes resulting in pulmonary hypertension, the prevention and/or treatment of remodelling of the pulmonary vasculature and/or right heart of a mammal. A method for the treatment of pulmonary hypertension, acute hypoxaemia, smoking induced lung injury, remodelling of the pulmonary vasculature and/or right heart, and/or chronic hypoxaemia, the method comprising the administration of a pharmacologically effective amount of a nitric oxide donor compound to a patient in need thereof by way of a nebuliser or metered dose inhaler. |
