abstract The invention relates to a supporting body (1) comprising an adsorber material (2) for adsorbing nitrogen oxides of an exhaust gas, which is produced in at least one combustion chamber (3) of an internal combustion engine (4), and to an operating mode of an internal combustion engine (4) that is equipped with an exhaust system (20) having a supporting body (1) of the aforementioned type. All combustion chambers (3) of the internal combustion engine (4) together have a combustion chamber volume (5) and the supporting body (1) has an adsorber volume (6), whereby the adsorber volume (6) is provided such that it is less than 75 %, in particular, less than 45 %, and preferably even less than 5 % of the combustion chamber volume (5). A supporting body (1) of this type ensures a good cold-start behavior of the exhaust system (20) and prevents the emission of nitrogen oxides, in particular, when using said operating mode of the exhaust system (20).
