abstract The present invention provides nucleic acid sequences encoding a polyvalent cation-sensing receptor in aquatic species, wherein the receptor regulates adaptation to environmental salinity and body composition. Partial nucleotide and amino acid sequences of polyvalent cation receptor proteins in cod, haddock, hake, halibut, mackeral, pollock, sea bass, swordfish, winter flounder, tilapia, tuna, catfish, seabream, turbot and salmonid fish such as atlantic salmon, chum salmon, coho salmon, king salmon, pink salmon, sockeye salmon, rainbow trout, and arctic char, are also provided.
