abstract The invention relates to a method for improving the colour index of multivalent alcohols, especially trimethylolpropane, by catalytic hydrogenation, whereby the multivalent alcohol which is used in hydrogenation is purified, after the production thereof, by distillation. The invention is characterised in that hydrogenation is carried out in the presence of a macroporous, supported heterogene catalyst which contains at least one metal of VII - X sub-group of the periodic system as an active metal.
