The present invention relates to methods for exerting a neuroprotective action on a population of cells in a subject with traumatic injury to the central nervous system. More particularly, the methods of the invention consist in administering a progestin or a metabolite of progestin to a subject having a traumatic brain injury. The progestin or progestin metabolite is administered in therapeutically effective concentrations producing a neuroprotective effect (protection against the decline in neuronal activity), and makes it possible to reduce and / or prevent various physiological events leading to neurodegeneration, such as cerebral edema or an inflammatory immune reaction. |
