abstract The present invention relates to a method of inactivating viral particles in a blood product, more in particular red blood cells and platelets, comprising the steps of combining said blood product with a photosensitiser, and activating the photosensitiser. In accordance with the present invention, a positively-charged sensitizer is used having a defined structure. Surprisingly, the damage to the blood product is strongly reduced.
