titleOfInvention Palatometer and nasometer apparatus
abstract A palatometer (10) and nasometer (20) apparatus for the diagnosis and treatment of speech impairment, new language sound learning, and other uses. The palatometer (10) includes a palatal body (40) containing electrodes (14) which fits in a user's mouth. Contact between the user's tongue or lips and the electrodes is indicated on display equipment (16). The palatometer (10) and display equipment (16) operate to indicate the position and movement of the tongue and lips. The nasometer (20) includes interchangeable sound operator plates (21) to fit users with different facial curvatures. Microphones (22, 23) are attached to the top and bottom of the sound separator plate (21) to measure sound emitted from the nose and mouth for determining the nasality of speech. The palatometer (10) and nasometer (20) are combined to optimize the ability to define speech normality as well as diagnose and remediate speech.
