Biomaterials for nerve reconstruction which comprise chitin or chitosan which has been modified on the surface with a laminin fragment containing an amino acid sequence of YIGSR or IKVAV. These biomaterials can be produced by, for example, introducing carboxyl into the surface of chitin or chitosan, activating the thus introduced carboxyl by immersing in an aqueous solution of a carboxyl activating reagent, next immobilizing molecules carrying thiol, activating the thiol immobilized on the carboxyl by reacting the introduced thiol with a thiol activating reagent to form an S-S bond, and then immersing in a phosphate buffer solution containing a laminin fragment having a YIGSR or IKVAV amino acid sequence to thereby immobilize the fragment while protecting the active site of the laminin fragment by a disulfide-exchange reaction between the terminal thiol of the laminin fragment and the S-S bond having been formed preliminarily. |
