A basic amino-acid such as arginine, or a salt thereof, when administered in very small amounts for instance in drinking water, is effective in reducing lesions caused by a protozoan protist in a vertebrate, especially in birds. It is also effective in enhancing egg production in poultry. A combination of a basic amino-acid such as arginine or lysine, or a salt thereof, with a cyclooxygenase inhibitor is also useful for the prophylactic treatment of a parasitic infection of a vertebrate with a protozoan protist. The invention therefore provides feed and drink compositions, veterinary and pharmaceutical compositions comprising antiprotozoal prophylactically effective amounts of a basic amino-acid, or salt thereof, optionally in combination with a suitable carrier. |
