A method for analysing a bacterial smaple, such as a milk sample, by fluorescence determination, in particular by flow cytometry. In particular, there is provided a method for the determination of the proportion of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, respectively, in a one step procedure in a sample containing said bacteria in an unfixed state, by contacting the sample wiht a detectable moiety capable of selectively binding to either Gram-positive or Gram-negative bacteria, and a detectable moiety capable of binding to both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The method is useful in e.g. the dairy industry for a rapid determination of the total number of bacteria and to distinguish between Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria in raw, pasteurised or processed milk. |
