abstract Plants infected with potato virus Y (PVY) were inoculated with infectious PVX RNA encoding PVX coat protein (CP) and modified chimeric NDV/BYMV CP. Antigen-coated plate indirect ELISA and immunoelectron microscopy of virus purified from infected plants showed that progeny virions contained from <1% to as much as 25% chimeric CP. The method can be used to produce and purify large amounts of NDV vaccine. Transencapsidated PVY virions expressing NDV were purified and used to induce anti-NDV antibodies in mice. Further, transgenic tobacco plants expressing HIV/BYMV CP were inoculated with BYMV. Progeny virions from transgenic plants contained transgenic HIV/BYMV CP.
