abstract | The invention relates to an electrochromic device containing a pair of glass or plastic plates or plastic films, at least one plate or film and preferably both plates or films being provided on one respective side with an electrically conductive coating. At least one plate or film of the pair and its conductive coating is transparent and the other plate or film can be mirror coated, and on at least one of the two plates or films, the electrically conductive layer can be subdivided into separate, individually contacted surface segments. According to the invention, the plates or films are joined together by a sealing ring on the sides of their conductive coatings and the three-dimensional structure, formed by the two plates or films and the sealing ring, is filled with an electrochromic medium which contains at least one reducible electrochromic substance OX2 and at least one electrochromic substance RED1 which can be oxidized. Said electrochromic medium is characterized in that one OX2 corresponds to the formula (CC), wherein R<201> and R<202> independently of one another represent alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkenyl, aralkyl, aryl, -[C(PQ)]<-> or a bivalent bridge B, Z<201> represents a bivalent group of the formula CR<210>R<211>, O, C=O or o-phenylene, R<210> and R<211> independently of one another represent hydrogen, methyl or ethyl, or CR<210>R<211> represents C3- to C7-cycloalkane-1,1-diyl, the rings C, D, E and F independently of one another can be substituted by up to 4 alkyl- and/or alkoxy-groups, or the rings C and D and the rings E and F can be bonded by a -(CH2)4- or CH=CH-CH=CH- bridge, P and Q independently of one another represent -CN or -COO-alkyl and X- represents an anion. Said electrochromic device is characterized by improved characteristics and contains electrochromic compounds which are synthetically readily available. |
