Activated carbon suitable for an electric double layer capacitor, large in output density per volume, and small in output density reduction even subjected to repeated cycles of charging/discharging under a large current supply and to sustained constant-voltage application. Activated carbon for an electric double layer capacitor which is produced by carbonizing coconut shells, and which is characterized by having a BET specific surface area of at least 2000 m2/g and up to 2500 m2/g, an average pore size of at least 1.95 nm (19.5 Å) and up to 2.20 nm (22 Å), and a pore volume, at a pore size between 5.0 nm (50 Å) and 30.0 nm (300 Å), of at least 0.05 cm3/g and up to 0.15 cm3/g as calculated by a Clanston Incaly method. |
