The invention relates to a method for the production of L-ascorbic acid, whereby free 2-keto-L-gulonic acid or 2-keto-L-gulonate C3-C10-alkyl ester is lactonised under acid conditions in the presence of a water-miscible organic solvent and said solvent produces in situ a solvent in which the produced L-ascorbic acid is poorly soluble. |
