abstract The present invention provides efficient methods for identifying nucleic acid molecules and polypeptides encoded thereby. These methods can be performed using transcription and translation systems or methods, or using translation methods. The result of these methods is a peptide or polypeptide that binds its own encoding nucleic acid molecule. The invention includes nucleic acid molecules that comprise an open reading frame, and that comprise or encode linking moieties that can link the nucleic acid molecules to the polypeptides they encode. The invention methods of identifying test compounds and targets using these nucleic acid molecules.
