A fluorescent material characterized by comprising a cyclic phenol sulfide selected among a thiacalixarene, sulfinyl thiacalixarene, and sulfonyl thiacalixarene which are represented by the formula (1) and, associated with the sulfide, a rare earth metal ion (wherein X is S, SO, or SO2; n is an integer of 4 to 6; and Y's may be the same or different and each is hydrogen, a hydrocarbon group, a halogenohydrocarbon group, -COR?1, -OR2, -COOR3¿, -CN, -CONH¿2?, -NO2, -NR?4R5¿, halogeno, -SO¿4R?6, or -SO¿3R?7, wherein R1 to R5 each is hydrogen or a hydrocarbon group and R?6 and R7¿ each is hydrogen, a hydrocarbon group, or a metal); and a fluorescent material composition obtained by dispersing or dissolving the fluorescent material in a medium. |
