abstract The invention concerns alkaline bactericidal compositions comprising a benzalkonium salt which is a salt of an inorganic or organic acid and a quaternary ammonium ion of the general structure: R1R2R3R4N+ wherein R¿1? is a benzyl group of which the phenyl ring is optionally further substituted, R2 is an alkyl group having 8-20 C-atoms and R3 and R4 independently represent a methyl or ethyl group, an inorganic phosphate sequestering agent and hydrogen peroxide. Preferably, in the benzalkonium salt R1 is unsubstituted benzyl and R3 and R4 are methyl and the inorganic phosphate is sodium tripolyphosphate. The compositions preferably also contain one or more surfactants such as nonionic surfactants.
