Disclosed is a method of preparing and purifying an aryloxy propanolamine ester represented by structural formula (I): R1 is an aryl group or a substituted aryl group. R2 is a C1 to C6 straight or branched chain alkyl group or a C7 to C9 substituted or unsubstituted aralkyl group. The method comprises the step of reacting an epoxide starting material with an amine starting material to form the aryloxy propanolamine ester, which can then be reacted with an acid to form an ammonium salt, and crystallizing said ammonium salt. The epoxide starting material and amine starting material are represented by structural formulas, respectively (II) and (III). Purified aryloxy propanolamine esters can be converted to aryloxy propanolamine amides, which are useful as drugs for the treatment of obesity and Type II diabetes, and as feed additives for livestock to produce leaner meat. |
