abstract | Chlorine-free coating composition, comprising an aqueous polymer latex, derived from at least (a) vinyl esters of α,α-branched carboxylic acids, having from 9 to 15 carbon atoms in the acid moiety, in a proportion of from at least 80 wt%, relative to the total weight of (co)monomers, (b) a stabilizing comonomer selected from acrylic acid, optionally α-substituted with an alkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, in a proportion of from 0.1 to 1 wt%, relative to the total weight of (co)monomers, and optionally (c) a silane based comonomer in an amount up to 1 wt% and preferably from 0.1 to 0.5 wt%, and optionally (d) a reaction product of a monoglycidyl ester of an α,α-branched carboxylic acid, containing from 5 to 15 carbon atoms in the acid moiety, and an acrylic acid which is optionally α-substituted with an alkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, in substantially equimolar amounts, in a proportion of from 0 to 20 wt%, relative to the total weight of comonomers, and wherein the (co)polymer has an Mw of from 10,000 to 1,000,000, and the polymer latex being mixed with a wetting agent, and optionally mixed with an apolar polyisocyanate or derivative, and poly(alkylene)substrates bearing these chlorine-free coating compositions, in wet or in dried/cured form. |
