abstract A method which comprises heating an aromatic polyester together with bis-β-hydroxyethyl terephthalate and/or low condensates thereof to conduct predecomposition, and reacting the predecomposition mixture with ethylene glycol to convert the terephthalic acid components contained in the mixture into bis-β-hydroxyethyl terephthalate and/or low condensates thereof; a method which comprises bringing the solution composition obtained by the above process into contact with a cation exchanger and/or an anion exchanger to thereby obtain bis-β-hydroxyethyl terephthalate lowered in ion content; and a method which comprises subjecting a bis-β-hydroxyethyl terephthalate containing mixture lowered in ion content to preliminary evaporation or distillation to thereby distill away low-boiling compounds, and subjecting the resulting mixture to evaporation or distillation in vacuo to thereby obtain pure bis-β-hydroxyethyl terephthalate having a total content of cations and anions of 15 ppm or below.
