titleOfInvention Diagnosis of conditions associated with activation of endothelin
abstract This invention relates to the diagnosis of conditions associated with activation of the endothelin system in a patient, to the assessment of disease severity, and to the detection or identification of patients who are at risk of developing cardiovascular disease. In addition, the invention is applicable to the monitoring of the effectiveness of therapy for such conditions. The invention is particularly, but not exclusively, directed to diagnosis, assessment of disease severity, monitoring the effectiveness of therapy, and detection of the risk of development of cardiovascular diseases, such as chronic heart failure or hypertension, and to identifying agents which are useful in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases. According to a first aspect, the invention provides a method of diagnosis of a condition associated with activation of endothelin in a patient, which method comprises the steps of: (i) determining the level of endothelin (ET) in a sample of saliva from the patient, and (ii) comparing the ET level so determined with a pre-determined standard; wherein an elevated level of ET in the saliva sample from the patient is indicative of said condition in the patient.
