A fusionless method of correcting spinal deformities in growing adolescents is disclosed utilizing a shape memory alloy staple (100). Various embodiments of the shape memory alloy staple (100) include features such as barbs (106, 107, 108, 109) on the inner and outer surfaces (110, 120) of the prongs (102, 103) in the shape memory alloy staple (100) as well as the use of notches (221) on the crossbar (201) or cross plate connecting the prongs (102, 103) to the shape memory alloy staple (100). In some embodiments, the shape memory alloy staple (100) has an aperture (450) defined through the cross plate (401) for receiving a bone screw (720) or other bone anchor which in turn allows the interconnection of a longitudinal member (710). |
