abstract A solid fluoroelastomer which has a nitrile group at an end and gives a crosslinked object excellent in heat resistance, solvent resistance, chemical resistance, compression set, and cleanliness; and a process for economically producing the fluoroelastomer. In the process, the target fluoroelastomer is produced from a solid fluoroelastomer having an amide group in the molecular chain by converting the amide group into a nitrile group in the presence of a dehydrant such as COF2.
