abstract A method for determining a physical or chemical characteristic of a liquid in which a drop of the liquid is located on the surface of a crystal of a quartz crystal microbalance. The liquid is evaporated from said surface while a signal output of the crystal microbalance is measured. The signal output is analysed to determine the characteristic of the liquid which may be, for example, the chemical composition or the viscosity. Apparatus for carrying out the method is also provided.
