abstract The requirements of a textile material in terms of surface smoothness for textiles working processes such as sewing or tufting are considerable. High needle speeds result in the material being sewn being subjected to thermal and mechanical stresses which can lead to thread breakage and loop damage if the surface smoothness is insufficient. This disadvantage can be avoided by providing the textile material with a smoothing avivage.
