abstract The present invention relates to a cyanide-free aqueous alkaline bath used for the galvanic application of zinc or zinc-alloy coatings onto the surfaces of a substrate, wherein said bath also contains a zinc-ion source, an optional source of other metal ions and hydroxide ions, a bath-soluble polymer of general formula (A) as well as optional traditional additives. The bath may further contain a quaternary derivative of a pyridin-3-carboxylic acid of formula (B) and/or a quaternary derivative of a pyridin-3-carboxylic acid of formula (C). This invention also relates to a method for the galvanic application of zinc or zinc-alloy coatings using the above-mentioned bath. When using the baths of the present invention, it is possible to obtain coatings which have a uniform thickness and a high glance level and which are not susceptible of scaling.
