abstract A method and apparatus for measuring the relative density of a gas, for example natural gas, in which the gas is supplied through an inlet to a chamber and exits through the outlet. The speed of sound in the gas is calculated, corrected for standard conditions (sc) using a regulator and an ultrasound emitting transducer and an ultrasound receiving transducer, then operate the regulator to measure the relative density RD of the gas using the formula: RD = ax SoSmsc + b where sossc is the speed of sound in the gas, corrected for standard conditions (sc) and a and b are constant. Said method is characterized in that it comprises measuring the speed of sound in the gas and using the speed of sound in an operation that gives the relative density of the gas corresponding to said speed of sound. This gas is supplied through a heat exchanger to an area in which an ultrasound signal is emitted to measure the speed of sound in the gas. A control means for adjusting the oxygen / fuel gas ratio of a gas combustion process characterized in that it comprises an apparatus for measuring the relative density of the fuel gas intended for the gas combustion process and means for adjusting a control system of the oxygen / fuel gas ratio according to the determined relative density.
