Multi-layered hydrogel constructs comprising: a first layer comprising a first polymerizable material, hyaluronic acid and a plurality of cells; a second layer comprising a second polymerizable material, chondroitin sulfate and a plurality of cells; and a third layer comprising a third polymerizable material, chondroitin sulfate, a matrix metalloprotease sensitive peptide, and a plurality of cells are provided.
