An active material for a battery contains a Y 2 Ti 2 O 5 S 2 crystalline phase, and has an I B /I A value of 0.3 or smaller and an I C /I A value of 0.15 or smaller, wherein I A , I B and I C are the peak intensity of the Y 2 Ti 2 O 5 S 2 crystalline phase at 2θ=34.5°, the peak intensity of a Y 2 T 2 O 7 crystalline phase at 2θ35.6°, and the peak intensity of TiS 2 at 2θ=34.1°, respectively, that are measured by X-ray diffraction using CuKα radiation. The active material is synthesized by preparing a raw material composition containing TiS 2 , TiO 2 and Y 2 O 3 and having a molar ratio of TiS 2 to Y 2 O 3 of higher than 1 or containing TiS 2 , TiO 2 and Y 2 O 3 and having a molar ratio of TiO 2 to Y 2 O 3 of lower than 1, and heating the raw material composition. A positive or negative-electrode active material layer included in the battery may be contain the active material. |
