abstract A driving method of an electrophoretic display device composed of a pair of substrates with electrophoretic elements, each containing electrophoretic particles, interposed therebetween, first electrodes provided on one substrate of the pair of substrates so as to correspond to pixels, and a second electrode which is provided on the other substrate and is shared by all of the pixels, in which each pixel includes a pixel switching element connected to a scan line and a data line, a memory circuit connected to the pixel switching element, and a switch circuit disposed between the memory circuit and the first electrode, and the switch circuit is connected to a first control line and a second control line, the driving method includes: inputting an image signal to the memory circuit via the pixel switching element; causing the first control line and the second control line to be connected to the first electrode by driving the switch circuit in response to an output from the memory circuit; causing a potential of the second electrode to alternate between a first potential and a second potential in a state in which a potential of the first control line is set to the first potential and a potential of the second control line is set to the second potential; and setting the potential of the first control line to a third potential which is higher than the first potential in an image display step which is performed after the inputting an image signal.
