abstract A novel phenanthroline compound is provided which is suitable as a compound for an organic EL device and is represented by the general formula (I): n n n n n n n n n n n n wherein R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , R 4 , R 5 , R 6 , R 7 , and R 8 are each independently a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group, a substituted or unsubstituted aralkyl group, a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group, a substituted or unsubstituted heterocyclic group, or a halogen atom with the proviso that at least one of R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , R 4 , R 5 , R 6 , R 7 , and R 8 is a group represented by the general formula (II): n n n n n n n n n n n n n n n n and R 9 , R 10 , R 11 , R 12 , R 13 , R 14 , R 15 , R 16 , R 17 , R 18 , R 19 , and R 20 are each independently a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group, a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group, a substituted or unsubstituted heterocyclic group, or a halogen atom.
