abstract | Mercaptoalkylalkyldialkoxysilane compositions are prepared by reacting an alkoxysilane containing an unsaturated organic group, with a sulfur containing organic acid, in the presence of a peroxide catalyst. This step produces a thiol ester. In the next step, methanolysis of the thiol ester is carried out in the presence of a basic catalyst. The resulting product is a mercaptoalkylalkyldialkoxysilane composition such as mercaptoethylmethyldimethoxysilane, mercaptomethylmethyldiethoxysilane, mercaptopropylmethyldiethoxysilane, or mercaptopropylmethyldimethoxysilane. Carrying out the first step of the reaction at least in part in the presence of air obtains maximum efficiency. |
