abstract The invention relates to an apparatus and a method for monitoring the autonomous nervous system in an individual, especially for detecting pain, by utilizing spontaneous change in skin conductance. The apparatus comprises measuring equipment ( 3, 4 ) for measuring the skin's conductance, and storage and processing means ( 5 ) for deriving secondary characteristics of the conductance signal, thus enabling it by means of signal means ( 6 ) to indicate that the pain or other activity in the autonomous nervous system has reached a certain threshold. The invention also relates to a method for controlling a warning signal ( 7 ) in such an apparatus.
