titleOfInvention Interpolated beamforming tracker
abstract The invention in its preferred embodiment is applied to a spherical assembly of rows of transducer elements arranged in a uniform distribution of elements in each circular row, each row being at a different latitude. The beamforming is accomplished in two steps. First, vertically oriented fan-shaped left and right half beams are formed by a portion of the transducers in each selected row within an elliptical array of transducers. Two adjacent left and right half beams are formed per row. These beams are angularly spaced by the included angle of two adjacent transducers of that row. By a process of interpolation of signals received from a signal source by the left half beams and the right half beams, respectively, resultant left and right half beams with a main response axis in the source azimuth direction are obtained. The resultant right and left half beams in adjacent rows within the array are combined in a second beamformer to provide upper and lower beams for each half beam (four quadrant beams) and a sum beam. The quadrant beam signals are provided to circuitry which generates the up/down and the left/right error signals which are used to control the main response axis directions of the four quadrant beams so that they are centered on the signal source.
