titleOfInvention Curling calyx thermoelastic ink jet printing mechanism
abstract An ink jet printer has a thermal actuator unit having a series of petal devices arranged around a central stem such that upon activation, the devices bend in unison to initiate ejection of ink from the nozzle chamber. The petal devices include a first material such as polytetrafluoroethylene having a high coefficient of thermal expansion surrounding a second material such as copper which conducts resistively so as to provide for heating of the first material. The second material is constructed so as to form a concertina upon expansion of the first material. The petal devices can be treated to have a hydrophobic bottom surface such that, during operation, an air bubble forms under the thermal actuator.
