abstract The present invention relates to a process for the oxidation, in the melt by means of oxygen or oxygen-containing gas mixtures, of ethylene homopolymer and copolymer waxes prepared using metallocene catalysts, wherein the oxidation of the polyethylene wax is carried out with addition of monobasic or polybasic inorganic acids or monobasic or polybasic carboxylic acids having from 1 to 6 or from 2 to 6 carbon atoms.The process gives waxes having a low melt viscosity and a light color.
