abstract The invention provides an intermediate compound (5-[2-hydroxy-5-(1-hydroxy-1-methylethyl)-2-methyl-cyclopentyl]-3-methyl-penta-2,4-dienyl)triphenylphosphonium salt for use in a multi-stage process for making an oxidative metabolite of the carotenoid, lycopene 2,6-cyclolycopene-1,5-diol. The intermediate compound has the formula:wherein Ph is phenyl and X1- is chloride, bromide, or hydrogen sulphate.
